As of November 24th 2014, 97.07% of Piwigo.com accounts have been upgraded to Piwigo 2.7

Piwigo 2.7 has been released 5 days ago. You can read 2.7 Release Notes to have full details about new features and improvements. Many of you already have already asked us how they can get it on their Piwigo.

On Piwigo.com, you don’t manage updates, so it’s useless to try by yourself. The update to Piwigo 2.7 will be applied automatically without any action from you. Then you are notified by email with a summary of changes. We have started to update Piwigo.com accounts.

Don’t forget to be patient :-). Piwigo 2.7 has been released but it doesn’t mean all plugins and themes are already compatible with this new version. The update can be performed once all your active plugins/themes are available in Piwigo 2.7. So if you want Piwigo 2.7 quickly, make sure you deactivate plugins you don’t really use.

Piwigo 2.7 “release candidate 1” was released yesterday with many new features and improvements. Here is a small sample:

  • new upload form, with drag & drop and no more Flash
  • sort albums by date
  • improved search
  • interactive discovering of Piwigo features with plugin “Take a Tour”

All changes are described on Piwigo.org annoucements: 2.7.0beta1, 2.7.0beta2 and 2.7.0RC1.

New theme Modus

Theme Modus, created by rvelices, will bring a modern look to your Piwigo: big square thumbnails for your albums, horizontal menu bar with drop down menus, automatic size selection, modern thumbnail display (à la GThumb+). Modus is ready for high density pixel screens (retina-like) with specific thumbnails and SVG icons.

Modus is a responsive theme. This technical word means that the display will automatically adapt if you visit your Piwigo with a tablet, a smartphone or a big screen. Modus comes with 5 color schemes out of the box.

Here is a tip for users who want to give a try without breaking their current theme: activate this theme but don’t make it the default theme immediately. Edit your user and make it use Modus, then you can see if it looks nice on your Piwigo. Then you can set Modus as default theme for all users!

Referral program gets stronger for summer 2014

This blog post includes two announcements related to Piwigo.com referral program. The first one is an increased bonus: for each referee, the referrer gets a 6-month bonus (instead of 1). A nice €19.5 discount, with no limit on the number of referees!

The second announcement is the “invite” feature. In your Piwigo, on page [Administration > My account > Manage > Referrals] we have added an “Invite your friends” box. You can send an email or share the referral link on social medias (Facebook, Twitter, Google+).

Piwigo 2.6 has introduced a geolocation feature for your visitors. Now you know where your visitors come from and you may have discovered that you often receive visits from Redmond (Washington, USA)  and Mountain View (California, USA). Don’t panic, this is not an attack: they are just robots of Bing (Microsoft search engine) and Google.

Their visits are useful because they make you “findable” in search engines. But maybe you don’t want to see all this noise in your visit history. Activate the new plugin No Stats for Robots if you want to see only real human visitors. Of course, this plugin won’t stop search engines, it just avoid registering their visits.

Piwigo.com website gets a new design. Main changes are on the home page: big background photo, more space, less text. We have also created a drop down menu and a bigger footer. We hope you like it! Design by Thomas Malandain and Florian Pasqué.

As of March 12th 2014, all Piwigo.com accounts have been upgraded to Piwigo 2.6.

Some of you already know that Piwigo 2.6 has been released a few days ago (and even a bug fixing version 2.6.1). Once you have seen the 2.6 Release Notes, you naturally ask how to get this new version on your Piwigo.com.

Be patient. Yes Piwigo 2.6 has been released but it doesn’t mean all plugins and themes are already compatible with this new version. Piwigo 2.6 is currently under tests as “release candidate”. It brings new features and many technical improvements. Just a few changes in Piwigo 2.6:

  • many icons in the administration (“retina” compatible)
  • geolocation of your visitors
  • new group manager
  • new email templates
  • new pages in mobile theme
  • new user manager

Plugin Automatic Size replaces Autosize

As described on previous post, plugin Autosize had too many problems. Anyway the feature of automatic photo size is an excellent one. Plugin Automatic Size is taking over, with a much simpler code (simpler code = less bug).

Plugin Automatic Size is now available for Piwigo 2.4 and 2.5 on Piwigo.com. Considering many users are still blocked on Piwigo 2.4 because they use Autosize, in the coming days we will change the upgrade script for accounts: if Autosize is activated, it will automatically be deactivated and Automatic Size will be activated. This will allow the upgrade to version 2.5.

Many users have activated plugin Autosize (approximately 10% of you, which means one of the favorite plugins). Unfortunately this plugin is incompatible with several other plugins and themes. Autosize is not available on Piwigo.com for Piwigo 2.5. In order to replace it, we need the help of beta-testers for the new plugin Automatic Size. See details on Piwigo.org forum.

Import from Flickr to Piwigo

Plugin Flickr2Piwigo lets you import your albums (sets) and photos from Flickr, directly into your Piwigo gallery. Here is the procedure to follow.

1) activate plugin Flickr2Piwigo

2) open page [Administration > menu Plugins > sub-menu Flickr2Piwigo > tab Configuration]. We’re going to follow the steps described on this page.

3) click on the flickr.com link and login to your Flickr account

4) from the Flickr2Piwigo configuration page, click on the “API keys page” link, click on the “Get another key” button, and click on the “Apply for a non-commercial key” button

5) describe your application (name, description, checkboxes) and submit

6) get your Key and Secret and copy them into Flickr2Piwigo configuration page

7) on the Flickr page, click on the “Edit auth flow for this app” link and copy your Callback URL, provided on Flickr2Piwigo configuration page.

8) back to Piwigo, go to the “Import” tab of Flickr2Piwigo and click on the “Login” button

9) Import your photos. You can select photos with a specific batch manager or you can import your whole Flickr structure.

New plugin Birthdate

Plugin Birthdate gives people age on each photo. Since Piwigo knows the date of the photo and if you tag the photo with people name, Piwigo only needs to know the people birthdate to display their age on photo. Plugin Birthdate let you define the birthdate of any tag.

Depending on the age, Piwigo will display seconds or minutes or hours… or years. If you have a family photo gallery, you will certainly appreciate to immediately know the age of kids on each photo!
